Lower Platte North NRD Shell Creek Rain Gardening Cost Share

The Shell Creek Watershed Improvement Group (SCWIG) was established in 1999 as a locally–led cadre of producers, residents, non-governmental organizations, as well as, state and federal agencies with the purpose of addressing the multi-faceted impairments of Shell Creek. The watershed experienced numerous damaging flood events and had multiple water quality concerns, including E. coli and atrazine impairments. The design and construction of rain or bioretention gardens capture storm water runoff during a precipitation event. Storm water is usually held in the soil root zone until water and nutrients can be actively utilized by specific vegetation. This helps reduce up to 70% of E. coli and nutrients from contributing drainage areas.
